City moving forward to develop new convention space

The City of Gadsden on Tuesday announced the end of one major riverfront project with the official opening of The Riverwalk at Coosa Landing, and the beginning of another as the city will develop the old K-Mart property on George Wallace Drive into a convention space.

The city council approved an agreement for $225,500 to architectural firm Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds, Inc. for design services for the renovation.

Mayor Sherman Guyton said the venue will be a modern replacement for Convention Hall. Plans for the current Convention Hall were not discussed.

The main part of the property will be a 50,000-square-foot venue with a 20,000-square-foot retail space. An additional 40,000 square feet may be renovated as future retail space.

During the work session, the council was presented with renderings, and Tammy Cohen talked about what the project would entail.
